Thecla was an early Christian martyr, a devoted follower of Paul who left her fiancée to follow the apostle to Antioch. In fending off the advances of a would-be rapist there, she committed assault and was sentenced to be eaten by wild beasts. Highly venerated in the Eastern Church as an ‘apostle’ in her own right, and lauded as an exemplary virgin and martyr by the Church Fathers, Thecla was decidedly less popular in the Early Modern Period. She was almost unknown outside of Spain, where she was considered the patron saint of Tarragona
